Thirdsie Launches

It never ceases to amaze me how unique each person is.
It never ceases to continually amaze me how different children born forth from the same womb can be.
I shall always rejoice in the individual imprint that each child possesses.

That said, let me relay a Story of Individuality of one of my progeny.

My thirdsie, my younger son of two, third of four, has always had a distinctive mark upon him.
He was the one that challenged my patience as a mother, the one whose bent was a bit left of center.  He was the one that wrote his own script amongst his siblings and caused me to shrug my shoulders when others would ask questions as to his own drummer kind of thinking.

It took me awhile to adjust to his own way but once this was accepted by his father and I, we grew to appreciate and enjoy his unique way.

This son eschewed the usual way.  Not one to enjoy 'normal' childhood activities, I remember distinctly the day that I gave up on Little League and organized sports in general.  He joined teams in junior high merely because his brother was involved in the same team and he was at an age where that was important.  I know he would have gotten along quite nicely without the experience however.  YS would beg me to remove him from AWANA and Sunday School.  He would point out, rather accurately, that they were places of noise, i and organization that he, as a matter of fact, did not need.  After informing him that he would have to attend our adult Sunday School class, sitting absolutely quiet without the entertainment of drawing or match box cars, he seemed rather pleased.  Turns out, he enjoyed our class and was often raising his hand, answering questions, usually accurately.  I knew then that his level of intellect might someday challenge my own and it looked like it might happen soon.  He stood by as a toddler, listening to the home school instruction of his two older sibs while seemingly playing with the assorted super hero, G I Joe kinda figures.  To my amazement, when the day came to begin him on phonics and number assignments, he was able to zoom ahead as he had heard it before and equipped with an audio modality, he was already entrenched in the basics.

This interesting young boy spent lots of hours reading encyclopedias.  A fount of trivia knowledge began to build up and soon his conversations could broach the span of generations, completely able to speak well with most age groups.  As a teeny guy, he would carry a large copy of Wind in the Willows around with him, stopping and perusing the book for hours.  His love a books grew and expanded and currently the walls of  his tiny cottage are covered in books.

Once he left us for college, we knew that he would probably experience it differently that others. This is a fearful and wonderful thing.  We knew his bent could border on the dangerous so we spent many an hour praying for God's protective hand upon him. Once graduation was completed, he parked himself nearby while he considered his future.  We observed him contemplate several different options and plans, all while keeping him close and relatively comfortable.

Over the last seven years as he contemplated, we had the pleasure of sharing his life as an young adult.  We have shared many meals, long walks, evenings in the garden, watching the most interesting movies and sharing our ideologies and philosophies and political leanings  Respectful and smart, he knew not to be forward about our differences since a home cooked meal and laundry service is something always handy to have near by.  Many times I knew I was being played but it didn't really matter much - his company is just that lovely.

The time has come.  YS has accepted a teaching job in another town and his time of launching has arrived.

It was his slow revelation of something that I have seen in him for a long time.  Even when he chose a non teaching degree, I knew in my heart of hearts, that it wouldn't be long before he would see what he was designed to do.  His enormous heart and generous spirit coupled with a vast knowledge encased in his no nonsense frame, has prepared him for the task of mentoring, teaching and caring for high school students in the important subject of literature. Unlocking doors of the mind and heart by teaching them the importance of reading and writing, will aid beyond the year that he will have them in his care.

As a mama of a nearly thirty year old man, I am over the moon that his time has come.  As merely a mama who has had the most delightful companion/son so nearby, I would be a liar if I denied that he will be sorely missed.

I can only imagine where this journey will take him.  He shall never get rich as a teacher, but I believe the richness will be in the hearts of the children that he inspires with his heart and his knowledge.  Years from now, I can picture his students referring to sophomore year English, and that eclectic, fun (but stern) teacher that they had in Mr. Cory.

And my heart shall be blessed....

The Ides of Jords

In about every birth order book, you will get some form of this: 'Third borns are naturally fun personalities.  The entertainer, the comedian, the different thinker.'
So imagine my surprise when this Third Born of three girls gave birth to a completely typical Third Born Son 26 years ago this very day.

Youngest Son was very different from my other two compliant children.  His jolliness as an infant did not prepare me for a hypersensitive, emotional, intense, rebellious toddler.  He was the one that compelled us to pray over his pillow before bedtime. He was the one that, in a sleepy state would pitch and throw any bible story book that I might have hid in a stack of ten or so bedtime books. He was the one that would bend the rules to the point of snapping.  When he was fifteen months old.   Yes.  A mere Fifteen Months, that little stinker sat in the corner for the first time.  And when he was told to stay on the tiny stool till mama said otherwise, he managed to go off in every direction with the very tip of his tiny toe hanging on the very edge of the tiny stool, agreeing to the technicality of  the literal.
Youngest Son was the one that had to do everything in his own timing.  He alone could help himself learn how to ride a bike.  He would sit astride  his bike while walking it around the block, building up the logical physics of bicycle balance and speed.  And when he had it figured out in his own brain, did he allow himself the trust to put his feet on the pedals and ride downhill.

YS is an enigma.  He is intensely intellectual yet as goofy as they come.  He is a fierce pro life liberal Democrat with Libertarian leanings.  He subscribes to the morals of the bible yet, but likes to be where the sinners are as a matter of infiltration.  Balancing things, as it were.  He is the King of Trivia, quite familiar with his sibs and parents calling him at all hours trying to remember the author of a book, quote from a movie or singer of a song.  When YS is missing from a gathering, he leaves an incredible hole.  His bear like hugs and complete love of his fam roles off of him like syrup.  YS's friends are an amazing stew of different personalities from all strata of society.  He has promised his kidney to a friend with brittle diabetes.  And if he were a match, he is quite serious about doing just that.

In short, he is an amazing  man, this now twenty six year old son of mine.  He resembles his papa and his kin, yet his left of center personality is completely me.  We spend lots of time enjoying each other's rapier wit and skewed viewpoint on this life.

A Blessing is Youngest Son and today is his day.  The Ides of March..... Memorable to this family....

Happy Birthday, Jords! LYSMICETY!

Quiet

Had one of those days.  The Come Down after a visit from my children. This past weekend, Baby Girl and Her Hubby returned from a vacation.  They were able to make an overnight stop with us, which thrilled Hubby and I.  As we prepared for bed, BG came into my room and laid across the bottom of our bed like she has done on many, many occasions.  This time, it was different.  This time, she had a very active in utero daughter tossing around within.  And Grammy got to witness it all.  BG and I have had some extraordinary discussions in this very place in my room, but this sweet little visit had to exceed them all.  We have talked about school, dance team, boyfriend issues, friend situations, matters of faith, fashion, homework, going to college, going to Africa and marriage.  But here we were, silent in our observation of this newest member of our family, introducing herself to the Visit to mama's Bedside at Night.  Stunning in it's simplicity and meaning.
Baby Girl and Her Hubby left the next afternoon to life back in college and parenting preparation.  But then came the call from Eldest Son.  His new job has brought a need to visit our hometown a bit more frequently, and this night he was to be coming on business but including supper with us as an added bonus.  As I wave BG and HH off, I slip into the next gear of entertaining ES.  We had a pleasant supper, unique in that it was me and 'The Boys', Youngest Son was off of work early and was able to join his brother, dad and mama.  Rarely happens; wonderful in the opportunity.  As I watched ES take on a fourth helping of Pepper Steak, I quietly said a prayer of appreciation for the man he has become.  He spoke glowingly and sweetly of his wife, the pride of his life.  He told us of her proficiency in taking care of children and his enjoyment of watching her in the church nursery the Sunday previous.  Lesson 342 on How To Please Your Parents:  Speak Glowingly of Your Spouse.
We ventured out to the porch for we had Frozen Novelties to enjoy.  Cory Rule: If you have a Frozen Novelty, you must enjoy it on the porch. And yes, after four helpings, ES did indeed have room for an ice cream sandwich.
Our conversation drifted in and out of many topics, all set to the steady rhythm of the swing.  Too soon, he needed to head home to Lovely Wife
The next day was Quiet Day. The joy of having four of our kids in our home in a 24 hour period can make me giddy and that giddiness can lead to a pleasant tiredness.  Not overwhelming- can't- move- tired, just peaceful, content, pleasant tired.  The tired that makes you go in slow motion and observe things like you're looking through a lens.
So as I went about my chores and errands, I observed the quiet in the still house.  The air conditioning off , and the windows open, sounds missed by motors, allowed another reverie.

I found the quiet spots in my home so enjoyable, I grabbed my camera to share them with you....
May your life be full of quiet still thoughtful moments......

Buck a Book; Book a Book....

Nothing gets Youngest Son 'Up an at 'em' on a Saturday morning faster than the Farmer's Market in Orange County, Indiana http://orangecountyhomegrown.org/markets.html.  This grand Farmer's Market is in the top ten in the nation, thanks to all it's fans that wrote in singing it's praises. The Orange County Farmer's Market encourages the buying of fresh local food, and trading with our native artisans.  It is a delightful way to spend Saturday morning and more than one member of my family enjoys it.

Youngest Son is known for making incredible scores at his favorite, Buck a Book; Book a Book stand.  YS, degreed in English, has already accrued quite a library in his small cottage.  All the books that didn't make his particular cut, ended up traded at the BAB/BAB's tidy little self contained traveling library, for tomes more suited to his elite literate tastes.  For the record, he did once try to steal my Shakespeare Volumes gifted to me by Kindred Spirit Friend, but I put my Book Selfish Foot down and demanded their return.  YS has to just wait till I'm dead to get those on his shelves.  He could actually be late for my funeral, now that I think about it, going through my titles before the auctioneers show up.

We usually have to part the ways once we get to the BAB/BAB trailer.  We congregate in the same section and he knows what to look for and I just point out others so we can get in each other's way.  I go off to grab the fresh produce and yummy Amish baked goods while he fills his minimum weekly requirement of literacy.  This past Saturday, I had to laugh when I saw him walking toward me with a Coca Cola crate FULL of books!  The look on his face is one I had seen in my own mirror; the one where I am half giddy/half high from the wonder of the score.  I could see him proudly bearing his heavy load on his shoulders in the beastly heat, carrying in his other hand, the victory drink of Market Lemonade, a particular refreshing beverage.  YS is further enamored with the fact that the proceeds of the BAB/BAB project, benefits the children's library in Orleans and we overheard the 'proprietor' of the project saying that over 600 books were given away to children the past year at their stand.  Love it.

It is a joy for me to share the love of books with Youngest Son.  I love it when we recommend to each other a favorite.  I love it when we can discuss what we gleaned from a certain chapter. The world of books broadens your horizons, stimulates your creative flow and introduces you to the magic of words.

Read to your children. An investment of time never regretted....

Lily Love

For the last 7+ Years, I've had the pleasure of having the sweetest relationship with the most wonderful child.  I've spoken of her before in this place, but as she ages and new aspects of her personality blossom, I find new things to report.
The visit on Tuesday, was another Growth Ring in our relationship tree.  I have gone from changing her diaper and making toast points and eggies for her breakfast once a week, to beginning to teach her how to crochet and sew.
My little heart soared when she mentioned in my sewing room this week that she wants to learn to sew and that she thought that I should teach her.
And I agree.
When Lily comes over, she knows what she wants to do.  When she was younger, we had specific things that had to be covered: Tea Party, Play her song, (Jars of Clay, Sunny Day), play the drums, color, and go through the vintage jewelry in my china cabinet.  Now, she kinda free lances it; going from one event to the other as they happen.  I go on to my events and she hers.  We interact and share our projects but basically she just wants to utilize my crazy house and all it's distractions.  Whether she's playing office, shop or house, she is content to share square footage with me and play with my things.
This week, her other good buddy, Youngest Son, who used to co-babysit with me, was off work and invited us Ladies out to lunch.  He thought that a different park would be nice for a change and we Ladies agreed.  He thought that a trip to the Local Jiffy Treet might be more memorable than just going to McDs for a Blizzard.  It certainly was for me; Chocolate Dipped Cones are not that easy to come by in our small community. Yum.
And so our day went, as all Lily Days do; pleasant, entertaining, conversational and instructive.

Lily started her time with me by drawing.  She allowed me to choose between a floral interpretation and an ocean scene.  Telling her that I am a flower aficionado, I choose the trio of posies.  She delivered to YS's abode, the Ocean drawing.
Lily has also discovered photography.  She loved sitting on my porch limestone seating, taking a myriad of photos of cars, golf carts and pedestrian's passing by.  And she caught me in a serious embroidery moment, as Adoring Dixie looks on.
One good turn deserves another, so I snapped her as she sewed two pieces of fabric for the first time.  It was exciting for both of us.
Little Brother Grant came with Lily's Mama along with other brother Maddox.  LBG has not come solo to Lily's Debbie's house yet.  But he is nearly ready.  He too, along with his siblings, is intrigued with the house as well as the Owner Occupier.  A mystical woman, not related nor near by or  family involved.  Just this generic grandmotherly sort, too old to be an aunt or parental friend.  Just a kind of unclassified enigma that seems to be a part of their family. LBG climbed up on my porch swing next to me,  reporting the important things to nearly four year olds: Like the time his dog got hurt and had to go to the dog hospital to get better. Pictured here, he found a headband that I was working on and immediately placed it on his Tshirt, and proclaimed that he looked like his daddy, the math teacher. Because I just happened to have safety pins on my porch, (doesn't everyone?), I lickety split affixed it to his little shirt and I know that he felt like a big grown up man with a tie.  Ah, the magic of dress up clothes...Being a thirdsie helps a lot too.....
And this parting shot of My Lily will stay with me a long time.....Her pensive concentration.  Her determination to do that which can still stymie adults....The closeness that her interests galvanize to my heart.....

Simple Sewing SUNDAYS: First Edition: More Pocket Fun

Rarely throw anything away.  I know my kids shudder as I write this.  It will be their lot to have go through all 'My Stuff' after I pass.  The same garbage that I rejoice over, they will, I'm sure curse.  Maybe, now, if you see my stuff that you want, perhaps I should keep a log, so that after the reading of my will, a Forwarding List will be distributed.  People matched up with The Stuff. Seriously.
Anyway.  I digress.  Majorly.
The point is, Youngest Son threw away these cargo shorts eons ago and I ferreted them out of the trash.  Having no idea whatever I would do with severely ripped in awkward places men's shorts, I did know that the cargo pockets afforded me lots of thoughts of adding them to something in the Sewing Future.(not to mention all the buttons that can add up on a pair of cargo pants; no, no do not throw things like this away!) And that brings us up to the Simple Sewing SUNDAYS!  I cut from the edge of the leg of the pants, up to a decent size of a pocket for the inside of my Vintage linen bag.  Fold down 1/4" and press on top of pocket, as pictured in the first photo. Then fold down, again, 1 1/4" and press again.  First photo again. Stitch along all three other sides 1/2" from edge. Trim seam.  Turn folded pressed edge to right side and press again.  Fold on the stitching line on the three sides.  Press.  Top Stitch all around.  Handy First Sunday Pocket made.  Now on to the Second Kind.As mentioned, these cargo pockets are not to be left to die on the vine. P-L-E-N-T-Y of life left in them.  I'm thinking that my traveling yarn and hooks could be quite comfortable and tangle free inside my purse in this ample pocket.  All that was needed was a careful trimming away from the shorts.  I tried to rip them off with my Faithful, Hardworking Seam Ripper, but dang, those dudes were on there for keeps!  Not one to be waylaid, I just cut them.  Simple.  Just trimmed them tidily, grabbed the other freshly made pocket, and placed them on the bag lining, centering and lining up both pockets to their new usage.  The pocket was edged well and thick with layers so I didn't bother edging it; just pinned it to the lining and sewed it on, reinforcing the beginning and the end; the tops of the pocket.See!  One side of the bag lining has these cargoey and standard-like pockets....And the other side has the triple compartmented vintagey lineny pocket!Snazzy, huh?  Before the lining is attached to the outer bag, put on the magnetic closure, being sure to reinforce with some Peltex(some serious interfacing/stabilizer like product)

There you go.  Three dandy pockets for your purse carrying pleasure.  And on a Sunday!  Now, go rest.

Introducing.......!

...Carey A. Carrot!

Hi!
My name is Carey A. (for the vitamin A that I am loaded with!!)Carrot and I am pleased to be featured on this blog!

Let me tell you a bit about myself..
I came from an orange 100% wool Gap Sweater from many years ago.
My creator, mama, received this sweater from her Youngest Son and he received it from a friend that had lost weight and was disengaging himself from some larger sweaters and shirts. Youngest Son was the very appreciative recipient of a fortune in some highly swanky sweaters and shirts.
Except for the orange one.
mama washed it.
And shrunk it. Really shrunk it. And exposed a myriad of moth holes.
Most people would say, 'amen' and put the dear thing to rest.
Not so, mama.
She saw me in the midst of shrunken wool and many non spiritual 'holeys').
She took her sharp sharp scissors and set to cutting off the sleeves, cutting around the holes and fashioning the very fun, very bright, very vitamin enriched personage that is me.
I hear that I am destined for a little girl in Cinncinati. I've never been there, I don't believe.
I'm looking forward to it.
Violet G. Grape and I have become fast friends and we look forward to our new lives in the pretend kitchen of a little girl.

Here are some of my 'baby' photos, before the renovation of fabric that mama is wont to make...

Please look at your belongings carefully before tossing them aside..
Some of my relatives could be hiding in them!!

Take Care!!
yours truly,
Carey A. Carrot (former sweater)
