Garden Exchange met at Rabbit Rita's this week. http://ritabunny.com And what a treat we were in for.!...RR has amazing energy, resourcefulness and creativity.   Under her guidance and hard labor, her Forest Home has become a showplace for her landscaping skill. We ooh and aahed over the planting and the blooming going on amidst the towering tree neighbors that she has all around her.  It was beastly hot and humid and a portent of storminess was in the air, but by the end of the tour that ended us up by her lovely fish pond/fountain, we really didn't care. Then to outdo her gardens, we got to enjoy her refreshments, which included, for me, the first time to experience Cushaw Pie. Extraordinary. A lighter pumpkin type pie, perfect for summer. Here is a similar recipe; she promised to bring her personal recipe at the next GE .http://southernfood.about.com/od/fruitpies/r/blbb337.htm  The company was relaxing and entertaining and RR's countless stories of her travels, kept us all engaged and lighthearted.  RR also provided one of the sweetest melons that I've had this season as well.  Her homemade bread made the chicken salad special and yummy.....One of the nastiest storms of the season kept at bay till most of us were safe in our cars and homeward before it got terribly scary.  I was repeating thankfulness that I was in a Land Rover on the winding, flooding country roads, with trees looking like they might shed some pretty strong branches upon my roof.  I was busy praying for my other friends on their longer routes home....What we gardeners do for  the chance to look at plants, flowers and landscaping......

And I'm sure after eating Cushaw Pie, still warm, and viewing the Heavenly Blue Hydrangeas, you all would agree.......

Sheesh....

I do not call Eldest/Admin that name lightly.  Yessiree; she earns every praise she gets for putting up with her Technological Deficient Mother.  After DAYS, (did I stress days enough?) of desperately trying to upload photos and deal with Blogger's down time, I resorted to asking my very busy E/A to explain, Why oh Why does my computer not like my camera any more.  And she patiently analyzed the problem and gave good advice.  Then one, two, three!  Upload happened!!  So in the meantime, this mama has been a very busy, albeit blogless, lady......

Let us begin.
Weeding.  The temperate temperatures allowed me to spend quite a few productive hours in the garden.  With my Guard Dog, Pudge, (can you see  him at the gate?) standing patrol, Stella the Ditsy Cat, following me around the Weedy Needy Areas, I had a pleasant day of puttering.  Thank you God.
Summer time brings about Vacation Bible School!  So many memories of VBS with my children.  Personally, I never attended one in my childhood.  Oh, but if I could have!  Please never give up on dragging the neighborhood with you to your VBS.  You just never know.  I think of how my life would have been different if someone, anyone would have invited me to their church for VBS or Youth Group.  Many a year when my children were young, we would have station wagon/van/car full of Unsaved Waifs, just ready for the Gospel Message.  My Hubby always took the week off so we could make it a family affair, both of us usually intrinsically involved as Director, Food Lady, Craft Director, 4-5 year old teacher, Story Lady, etc, etc...It was a long hard but very fun week.  This year, my only interaction is to design and create Space Patches for an astronaut costume for a Space Themed Bible School.  Having made MANY a costume for my Pretend World Children, the thought was exciting and reminiscent for me. So now, between today and Sunday, I shall be embroidering till my fingies bleed.  And happy to do it, I am just that fond of VBS.
Before I started the patches, I did finish The Lineny Vintage Bag!!  It's everything I was hoping it would be; roomy, soft, shaped well and well, you know, of course...Pockety!!!

And the Sows Ear to Silk Purse Award goes to:
The Throwaway 40's Lawn Chair That I Pulled Out of the Garbage!
I wouldn't exactly feel safe sitting in this chair; some rather conspicuous duct tape at some key junctions, keeps me from offering it to guests.  BUT as a proud displayer of my New Guinea Impatiens (and an errant tomato plant!), it works quite well!!
And last but certainly not last, a wonderful photo of Rabbit Rita's http://ritabunny.com/ One of Three Solid Blue Hydrangea Bushes that we visited on the Garden Exchange.  A whole bush this color!  Extraordinary!  Makes me sigh just looking at it!

So that, dear readers, is some of what mama and her collection has been up to....And More.......Tomorrow, if the Kodak gods smile upon me........!

Show and Tell

First off, I really think it behooves me to show this recent shot of my Endless Summer Hydrangea.  Those of you that follow me on Facebook, might remember me making the statement, 'This Is A Hydrangea Year'. Seems like I read the signs well.  This little lovely is in my front yard, but it has a sister and brother in the back with as many blooms as well.  One of the lovelies has NEVER bloomed in all it's 9 years!  So, with great confirmation, I continue on with the claim: This Is A(n) Hydrangea Year!!!

At the last Garden Exchange meeting, I believe I mentioned that We Ladies of the Garden Exchange, passed the time perusing magazines. Sewing Sally brought with her three copies of MaryJanes Farm magazine.  And I was hooked.  I waited to see if anyone else was going to take some of the copies and when I was ready to leave, all three were still sitting there.  So I scooped them up, politely leaving one of them.  I have carried this copy to Cincinnati and back, reading it in transit and before beddy bye time.  Truly amazing mixture of sewing, fiber crafting, repurposing, organic gardening etc etc.....Also pictured are the nifty slippers that I do believe all my girlies might be needing this winter.  Better start now while swinging on my porch swing or in transit to all Good Children's Faraway Homes.  I certainly want to get a subscription to this handy zine.  I can see my children and pretend children getting a lot out of these recyclable (in more ways than one) ideas.

And What's This? What's This??
Ah.
Fabric from last week's YardSaleExtravaganza with Eldest/Admin and The Vivien.  The Three of Us + Poppy, took on several highly rated sales, full of vintage toys, (a Lite Bright with tons of templates and all the colored pegs separated in little jars! ), lots of vintage sewing supplies and a couple of really amazing pieces of fabric.
Eldest/Admin agreed with me that this particular piece will make a dandy new bag for the owner of the Daffodilly Yellow bag, that as predicted, even with extreme caution, has become sadly dirty.  Another discarded belt with O rings from another belt and a handle has appeared. The lineny goodness of this 70's vintage piece has me all excited...
I even got all my yard doins done early this morning, mowing, trimming, sweeping and pruning an occasional (who am I kidding??) outlaw weed, all with the anticipation of sweating it up big time, showering, shampooing, eating lunch then off to the Sewing Room to see what kind of bag Vintage Linen wants to be....
Bet you can't wait either..(setting aside some of your weekend waiting, right?!)
Stay tuned.....

Porchin It!

( Grandpa Murphy's Boot bench. Stayed near the back porch of their home forever. Grandpa would change his work boots to his slippers when he came home at the end of the day.)
(Two little odd tables that were purchased different years but just seem like sisters.)

(The sun drying of the wicker after a good wiping down)

(Baby Girl's cast off paint came in handy as the transformation begins!)

Since the first memories of my grandmother's porch, I have been in love with the thought of the comfort of summer outdoors. It has been my seasonal goal to create the lovely atmosphere that I experienced in my grandma's cozy summer porch. Her broad, screened-in area covered the whole front of her tiny house. It seemed huge to my seven year old eye, yet comfy in all it's chintz and mission style porch furniture of the day. Two rockers, one settee, two straight chairs and odd little tables, appropriately placed for our 7-up floats. We would watch the hummingbirds visiting her honeysuckle and feel the coolness that her massive hydrangeas created for privacy. The whole sensory experience stayed with me all my life.
And I sought out this memory to create it for my family.
From the time that we shared in a windowed in front porch in our first married apartment, to the wide, shaded veranda that we now own, I have sought to create a haven of summer comfort for all that would pass my way.
While the winter winds would blow, I would start dreaming up the 'theme' for that summer's porch. Some years I went colorful, like the Mary Engelbreit year where each peace of wicker was a joyful spill of color. Some years I went earthy. My old wooden porch in the northern house was known to have a different color of porch paint each year. Neighbors and friends would inquire if the porch was 'open' for the season or not. I would usually announce that we were 'porchin it' to anyone interested in settling their late spring warm self into the comfort of a a overstuffed wicker sofa or rocker. Pillows abounded and candles kept just enough light to see one an other's smile or tears from the day.
Last week, as the temps climbed, I turned on my outside water, attached my hose, emptied the accumulated dirt from last year's porch upon my yard, while I purged the beloved area with a good soaking/scrubbing. Something so very satisfying, that first wash. It feels like a cleansing of the soul; an almost spiritual experience. Running my bare feet over the clean cool concrete of my porch, testing out the strength of my bare tootsies of the season, I feel a rite of passage of the season that pretty much dominates all other preparations of the season.
I cleaned off all the furniture. I shook out all the cushions, I took the assortment of last fall cleaned pillows out of their 'sealed for your protection' bags and evaluated the furniture needs.
This year, my Shabby Chic odds and ends auction cast off tables, needed some attention. Shabby Chic can only be as good as they survive with the minimum of paint required for the look. This year would be the little piece's swan song if they didn't get some protection from a good coat of free paint. (Baby Girl's cast offs from a past apartment). Usually, fabric will mandate the paint color, but this year it was the free paint color that predicted the 'theme' for the year.
Gingham.
That's the word.
The stash from Miss Pauline's Auction last fall, should do most nicely.
So the transformation has begun.
Furniture is painted, cushions in line for a recover, lamps and candles in their places, odd crazy cat figurine that Baby Girl's Hubby hates, all ready for the piece de resistance: The Floral Display.
I have been known to receive poems and small essays regarding my porch.
Here is one of my favorites from my wonderful Kindred Spirit friend. It was written after a nice, springtime visit. That year, she helped me paint wicker and pick out fabric. A really grand time:
Prayer for Deb's Porch
May your steps be always stepped upon
By feet that bring good news.
May tears and laughter grace you,
May you comfort, bless and soothe.
May potted plant and flower
And fragile twisted vine,
Cheer your sills and railings
While spring and summer shine.
May you celebrate the holidays
With banner, wreath and flag.
May children use you for home base
When playing games of tag.
May lovers rock and swing here,
As they whisper and they woo.
May promises avowed here,
Be heartfelt and be true.
May friends and family congregate
To find sustenance and rest
And may Jesus Christ remain
Your most invited Guest.

And Now a Word From Our Creator....

Look what I found lurking amidst dead leaves and wild vinca vines!
A teeny little snowdrop that almost forgot to appear!
I love it when you find these things in the midst of the winter's vestige.
Hope reigns.

The warm day and the little snowdrop interlude made me ready for more...
And what did I find?
Buds on my beloved hydrangea bush!!
Just the thought of the gorgeous multi colored globes got my little gardening heart a racin'...

Mosied on out to Hubby's Crab apple Tree (purchased one Father's Day when he was a bit crabby from overwork!)
After last year's lack of blooms, I fretted that perhaps it was on his last legs..
Alas and Alack!
BUDS!
The blooms on this little tree are wonderful...
Dare I hope for some this year?

And of course, last but certainly not least, my happy little jonquils, heralds of spring, Easter, Hope, Passover, Resurrection..
I love this variety because they look they are riding the wind, with their little yellow tresses, blowing backwards....If you look carefully, you'll see the little grape hyacinths shyly hiding in the background...Just 5 hours later and much sun, these little guys were standing much higher...The encouragement of the Sun/Son, right?

Ah, spring; my favorite....

Porch Time

Nothing I like better than some porch time.
Been that way since I was very young and my grandmother had this tiny, tiny house that had one awesome front porch. She had this mission oak type porch furniture, and to this day I can still smell the summer that clung to the chintz cushions on that lovely furniture. Sitting in this shaded, screen covered room, with huge hydrangea bushes on both sides, I would sip on my 7 up sherbet float that she made just for me and dream, perhaps, of the day when I would have my own wonderful Porch World.

Since that time, I have accumulated porches and memories along the way.
Even our first apartment has an enclosed porch that I immediately wanted to set up like Grandmas. Our first house had a nice little porch with a swing that brought my first two babies bliss on hot summer days.

Our second house was the porch that remains in my children's memories. A small screened in porch became host to innumerable visitors. Every space was covered with a comfy spot to perch with a neighboring table to lay the inevitable snacks brought out to entice guests to stay longer. The porch evolved and had themes each year. New paint, a ceiling fan, small lamps, many cushions. Lots of naps. How in the world could such a small area host such memories, I have no idea, but I can still picture myself with friends, laughing till way late, while our children played kick the can or flashlight tag.

Now I have my grown up porch. Wide and comfortable, it can accommodate the size of my growing children. We do not have to stumble over each other's feet or risk walking on someone to get around. Wicker collected from many years, finds a home on my porch. I have a wicker porch swing from many years ago thanks to an auction, a rocker from a garage sale, and a small dining set from an estate sale. The one thing my heart has always longed for, wicker-wise, was a chaise lounge. People do not usually let go of those things. They keep them till they are done or they end up in an antique store, out of my range.

Then this happened:
Baby Girl's Mother in law asked me if I wanted a wicker ottoman. I NEVER say no to anything wicker. I gave her an affirmative and a few weeks later, she showed up in her truck with her amazing chaise lounge! The look on my face had to have startled her because she told me quickly, if you don't want it, you don't have to take it! She mistook my awe with crazed disgust. (I'll have to check to see how similar those looks are! :D)
I was speechless.
She had no room for it in her recent downsizing and knew I owned a home for Unwed Wicker. She knew where to take it. Even if she had trouble with it's name, it mattered not....I was going to own a wicker chaise lounge..For my grown up porch!

Last Friday, Faithful Friend, tried it out and proclaimed it very adequate and terribly addictive and stayed till way late while a storm raged outside of the porch.

I love porches.
