Birthday Bliss

The day dawned clear and deeply blue, setting off the last of the autumn color.

Wait a minute.  No it didn't.  Rainy and cold, it was a perfect day for me.  I love rainy days.  No dog walking first thing or urgency to go anywhere other than a different spot on my mattress.  Hubby agreed.

Once I did join the conscious, I skipped downstairs to find a brightly colored gift on my front door knob.  This was the second time this week this has happened.  It could become a habit for me.  I like it.  Editor Friend left a most jolly gift yesterday and Sweet Sharon completed her yearly habit of leaving my gift first thing in the morning.  The tradition started many years ago when as an elementary teacher, she would be off to work before the crack of dawn.  Like a small child, I would sometimes smile to myself as I, half asleep, would hear her car pull away from my curb after accomplishing her delivery.  For some lonely birthdays, this was such a blessing to me.  This year, since she lives miles away from me now rather than the convenience of down the block, she had Birthday Fairies deliver the yearly surprise.

Monday morning, Pretend Daughter Emily came for her regular breakfast visit.  This time, we shared lunch rather than breakfast and she blessed me with a lovely fall bouquet.  She is a November Gal as well and we shall do her birthday next week.  November People stick together.

As you can see, the flowers went well with some of my other gifts: Chocolate Iced Chocolate Brownies, Extremely cool vase from Sweet Sharon and more chocolate from Crazy Dee.  My friends know me.

Crazy Dee had called earlier this week to reserve me for The Actual Day.  She did not allow Hubby to come with.  She is crazy that way.  CD did take me to my favorite spot for lunch and brought a BIG bag of wonderful, me-like gifts to celebrate.  She knew she better.  When I am by myself in her kitchen, I tend to place 'reminders' on her planning calendar.  I conveniently let her know how many shopping days are left till the Big Day.  Nice of me, yes?  Do not worry.  She is worse about her birthday than I am about mine.  We have a good time out doing each other.

On the way home from lunch, in the midst of pouring rain, a lone garage sale was taking place in a wee little town.  Lots of fabric and the most wonderful milk pitcher and matching tea pot.  These type of kismetian opportunities are special little kudos from God.  Only God could have arranged that sale on this day in that community.  In the rain.  And cold.  And I do believe I might have been the only one that went to it.  I did wake up the 'proprietor' in her van as I knocked on the door of the rented space that was the garage sale door.  I have the most fun.

After I was home for awhile, the doorbell rang.  Huzzah!  Another gift!  Neighbor Natalie brought by her Little Neighbor Meisa, to give me a vintage Coca Cola sign!  I was very touched by her acknowledging My Day.  And this year, I didn't even have a sign in the yard!  Extraordinary!

I had a bit of time before Youngest Son escorted me to our local Mexican Restaurant for supper.  The rain was turning colder and I turned to one of birthday presents for a little warmth.  Earl Grey Lavender Tea sounded just right.

After festive feasting with YS, I came home to wrap my mind around my new dining room curtain material.  A day off of other people's work, I indulged myself by measuring, cutting and making the curtain and cutting out more for cushions.

The hours of the evening ticked on while I wrapped up the day reading my Facebook wishes and counting myself well blessed by the incredible people in my life.

So here's to year Fifty Eight!
May I do it justice!!

[Postscript: Next Day: One beautiful sculpted angel for my creche crafted and created by Rabbit Rita!  A post unto itself!  Birthday Brownies received in the mail from the consistently amazing Most Loving Friend.  I receive brownies for most life occasions from her: birth, bereavement, birthday, bed and breakfast jaunts etc etc.  She is swell.  Sigh.]

Unwrapped

Did Vivie love her grammy-made owl?
You bet!
The crinkly paper idea from another blogger along with soft stuffing and the added attraction of having grammy's old sweater utilized as well, made for a grand companion for a long trip to her papa's home town.
This owl has a brother as well, but I'm not sure he's been unwrapped yet, so we must wait to meet him.

Eldest/Admin Daughter kept me a busy with three orders for her in laws this year!
She had sent out a Purse Needs Survey that I made for each sister in law and her mother in law, this fall.
It was easy to configure a bag for each of them with the help of that handy dandy tool.
If you would like me to send you such a survey for Future Purse Needs from mama's collection, leave a comment....
This tote is for Karyn, an Avon lady/school secretary. Plenty of pockets to handle that(those) job(s).

This pretty pink and brown creation was for Martha....(the real purse is not as blurry as the bad photographer!)
She's having shoulder surgery on Jan 10th, so I left out some of the heavier weights I usually put in the shoulder strap connections and flap....Hope your surgery goes well, Martha....I'll be praying....

And this springy number is Beth's....Favorite color: blue, zippered pockets requested and given....no outer pockets...
See how easy that is??

Back to the sewing room....
Someone's birthay is coming and I'm told that most years, having a January 6th birthday, someone tends to get overlooked......
Let's make a big statement this year......:D

mama's eve

My birthday was a real headache to my mama.
I believe she had SAD (seasonal affective disorder) in the 50's, an unhappy woman was looked upon as disruptive and irritating. She was labeled as difficult and high maintenance.
OK. Maybe she was high maintenance.
But she couldn't help it if autumn made her sad.
Guess I didn't help much.
I always felt a bit guilty for making her celebrate when she'd rather curl up in a ball and read.
Then I met this amazing man at the grand age of 16 that changed my apologetic approach to my birthday.
He actually LIKED/LOVED fall! Imagine that!
And in the nearly 40 years that we've shared earth, he's made me a royal fan of the golden season.
Dare I say that I now embrace my birthday, yes, even catching up on all those sad birthdays.
And my friends know this.
They entertain me with great fanfare and fun.

Today, the 2G's mama snuck on my porch, flying a birthday banner and balloons for all the passers by (in case they want to go do some birthday shopping for me:D)
And then Sweet Sharon brought by her stash.
Sweet Sharon has been my neighbor for 10 years and I think my friend forever since we are kindred spirits.
She was the one that introduced me around when we first moved here and helped me celebrate my first birthday in Mitchell with great cheer.

Then she went an outdid herself.
She came to my door bearing a great blue bag.
FULL of the most lovely fabrics.
For my bags.
Hand selected for me and my new business.
What a lovely and amazing gift.
What a lovely and amazing friend...
Happy Birthday Eve to me.....

Can you believe how grand these wonderful pieces will make up into functional, fashionable bags for this season?

(and below is Most Interesting/loving Friends fetching new birthday bag....
She's still in China and I presume too busy to look at little ol' me's blog, so I feel safe showing you...)

Hmmmmmm......
New fabric, new bags, new year...
Makes a person want to celebrate and share......

Better stay tuned.....:D

Sneak Peek

Shhhhhh!
Some secret sewing going on....
Vivien is here for a visit (Yay!!) and she hasn't yet tried on her dandy new jacket that Grammy made for her, but it nearly matches exactly with the purple in her new hat that mommy knitted for her! Great minds, huh??
It was a giant hoot to make this tiny coat...
I hope she is warmed by the love that was crafted into it.....:D

This tidy little bag is one that was special ordered from Most Interesting/Loving Friend...
As soon as I saw the material, I knew it was her, but she hasn't seen any of it yet, so I can't reveal too much....
I believe she and her wonderful hubby are in China as I type this....
And I believe that they have the Internet in China as well, so I must be covert...
So Happy Belated Birthday, Dear Most Interesting/Loving Friend!
And remember, for these two weeks before MY birthday, YOU are older!!!!! :D

Crazy Mixed Up Birthday Soup

In my 'later years', I have discovered the wondrous use of my own recipe inventions.
Not that I was ever recipe bound, but recently I have had some rather successful forays into my own concoctions...

Last night was one of them.
We were out to celebrate, big way, food wise. It was the 2G's Papa's Big 3-0 and we wanted to fete him in a foodylicious way...
Being a meat and potatoes man, Hubby did his part by providing his Italian Beefs. My input was a deviation of my traditional potato soup.
For once, I'm glad I swerved out; 2G's Papa and Mama loved it and compared it to their favorite restaurant's fave soup. BIG compliment to Nana!

So here is the recipe the best I can recall. Do not fret. Get the main things together and don't think you'll go wrong!

Enjoy!

Crazy Mixed Up Birthday Soup (aka Creamy Potato Soup)

10 potatoes (I have the privilege of using fresh potatoes from a friend's garden)

2 carrots

1 onion

6 cups of chicken boullion

1/2 cup evaporated milk

1/2 cup whipping cream (or half and half or anything creamy in your fridge)

1 cup milk

1 cup of shredded sharp cheddar cheese

1/2 lb of cubed ham

1/4 lb of butter

1/2 cup fresh chopped parsley

(this gets tricky; I had leftover steamed broccoli and cabbage maybe 3/4 cup each)

Saute cubed potatoes, chopped onions and carrots in the butter. Cook till onions are clear and potatoes change color a bit.

Add the boullion and cover and cook till potatoes are soft.

Puree this mixture, adding the cooked leftovers, in a food processor till really smooth.

Place pureed mixture, cheese and ham back into stock pot.

Add the milks/creams and stir well. Simmer on low till bubbly. Stir in fresh parsley.

Serve with a bit of shredded cheese on top if you want.

Good stuff....

Friendship Painting

I painted Crazy Dee's living room today. Well, first coat. Daylight will have to be in place before the second coat goes on. We are redecorating 'on a dime' by painting, making a window larger by putting up a bigger rod, applying a chair rail, doing some stenciling...etc etc....Fun stuff....

I love my friend so painting for 6 hours was nothing.

CD celebrates my birthday for the whole month.
She has a red and yellow sign for my front yard, reminding passers by that they should greet me all month in celebration of my special day (month).
It is a month long hoot.
Last year, I had a gift every other day of my birthday month.
It was amazing.
We can be totally honest and lovingly joking with each other. We pray for each other and enjoy our bible study together.

I will sew to my fingers bleed for her.
And sometimes they do.

She is a rare and precious friend....
Off to clean my brushes.....
